A survey of British adults to determine attitudes towards resuming travel once the Coronavirus restrictions are lifted has revealed a strong desire to travel, with the UK and Europe top of the ‘must visit’ list.

The online survey* carried out by international lodging owner-operators, The Ascott Limited, found that more people (60 per cent) wanted to book a holiday when restrictions are over, than visit family and friends (22 per cent) or visit a restaurant (15 per cent).

The research echoes the findings from Visit Britain’s latest consumer sentiment research, where a third of international travellers surveyed stated they are ‘in the mood’ for travelling abroad in 2021.

When asked what they would most like to experience in 2021, the majority of the Ascott survey respondents said they would like to visit a capital or key gateway city (66 per cent). The trend for staycations remains strong, with many people expressing a desire to stay within the UK. A large majority (70 per cent) also hoped to travel within Europe, perhaps reflecting the fact that further afield destinations may need to stay on the wish list for the time being.

UK, France and Spain topped the respondent’s travel wish list, and while location was cited as the most important criteria when booking a future trip, unsurprisingly, hygiene and cleanliness came a close second, followed by flexible sales conditions.

Philippe Mettey, Vice-President Sales & Marketing, The Ascott Limited Europe said: “It’s encouraging to see that people are looking forward to being able to travel again when it is safe to do so, perhaps to experience the excitement and buzz of one of the European capitals, or reunite with friends and family, and we will continue to ensure that our properties provide a safe and welcoming home from home for all our guests.”

Ascott operates five apart’hotels in the UK including Citadines Barbican, Citadines Holborn-Covent Garden, Citadines Islington, Citadines Trafalgar Square, Citadines South Kensington as well as the deluxe four-star Mayfair hotel The Cavendish London.

Each Citadines property offers a variety of apartment types suitable for up to four guests. The apartments include fully equipped kitchens, a separate bedroom, private bathroom, living area, a flat screen TV and free WiFi.

The Ascott Limited has been awarded the SafeGuard Label for four* of its London-based Citadines properties and The Cavendish London by testing, inspection and certification body, Bureau Veritas. The label confirms that the properties have the appropriate health, hygiene and safety procedures and processes in place which are in line with globally recognised best practices.
